Understanding Fine Art Paper
What You Need to Know
When starting out in art, choosing the right paper can be confusing. Fine art paper is specially designed to hold your chosen medium well, withstand repeated work, and ensure your artwork lasts. Here are the core factors to consider.
Paper Weight and Thickness
Paper weight is measured in grams per square metre (gsm). Generally:
- Lightweight paper (75-130gsm): Good for dry media, for quick sketches or practice but prone to warping if wet media is applied.
- Medium weight (160-250gsm): Suitable for light watercolour, acrylic washes and mixed media.
- Heavyweight (300gsm and above): Ideal for heavy wet media or layered techniques.
Paper Texture: Hot-Pressed, Cold-Pressed & Rough
- Hot-Pressed (HP): Smooth surface, excellent for fine detail with pen, pencil, and ink.
- Cold-Pressed (CP): Medium textured, versatile for watercolour and acrylics.
- Rough: Prominent texture, great for expressive watercolour washes and texture effects.
Common Paper Types for Beginners
- Sketch Paper: Thin and inexpensive, mainly for pencil or dry media.
- Cartridge Paper: Medium weight, good all-rounder for pencils, ink, and light washes.
- Mixed Media Paper: Designed to handle wet and dry media, great for experimentation.
- Watercolour Paper: Heavier, more absorbent and textured to suit watercolour pigments.
Choosing Paper Pads for Your Medium
- Graphite and coloured pencils: Cartridge or sketch paper with a slight tooth.
- Ink and pen: Smooth or hot-pressed paper to prevent bleeding.
- Watercolour: Watercolour paper with a texture of choice, it will be visible in the final work
- Acrylic: Heavy mixed media or acrylic paper pads to support thicker paint.
How to Care for Your Paper
- Store pads flat to avoid curling.
- Avoid touching the paper with oily or dirty hands.
- If in doubt, test your medium on a corner before starting a piece to check how the paper reacts.
