Jotaká

Valencia-based illustrator Jotaká works across digital and traditional media, creating character-led artwork for global brands while developing personal projects in ceramics and drawing.

Jotaká

Hi! I’m Jotaká and I’m an illustrator based in Valencia, the city where I was born.

I am an artist who works with digital and traditional media (inks, watercolour, gouache…) and I work for brands, advertising projects, social media, magazines.

I also enjoy making ceramic pieces and creating personal projects. Some of the brands I have worked for are Netflix (Stranger Things), Iberia, Hyundai, HP and other smaller brands as well.

Nowadays I’m Daler-Rowney ambassador and I just started my Youtube channel 🙂

Interview with Jotaká

Jotaká is an illustrator from Valencia whose work spans digital and traditional techniques, from inks and watercolour to gouache and ceramics. His practice blends client projects for major names such as Netflix, Iberia, Hyundai and HP with a steady stream of personal explorations that reflect his lifelong relationship with drawing. Now a Daler-Rowney ambassador and newly active on YouTube, he continues to refine his craft, build characters that feel personal and expressive, and explore new ways of sharing his creative process at a pace that feels true to his work.

What inspired you to pick up a brush/pencil and start painting/drawing?

Since I was a child, I’ve always expressed myself through painting. I started by copying the drawings from the TV shows I watched, and now I create my own characters.

When did your love of art start? Did you always want to be an artist?

Yes, my grandfather loved to draw and paint as a hobby, and it was always common to see the house full of drawings. I think he greatly inspired me to become an illustrator.

What would be your advice for new artists just starting up?

I would tell them to create pieces about topics they know well and be honest with the pieces they create. I think that’s the most important thing.

What is the best tip you were told early in your career?

“Never stop drawing and creating new things”

How has social media helped your career?

They supported my work from the beginning. Social media was a very important window to the world, although I don’t see it that way anymore. I think social media platforms like Instagram now push too much for fast-paced content, and that’s why I’m working on other platforms like YouTube where I can showcase my work at a more relaxed pace.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Movies has always been my greatest source of inspiration. I pay close attention to visual elements, but I like to transform them and give them my own unique touch.

What is your favourite Daler-Rowney product & why?

Inks are great, the colours are very saturated, and I love working with them for quick sketches and also for more detailed illustrations.

What is a technique that you haven't tried yet that you would love to try & why?

I discovered ceramics a few years ago and I’m learning so much by making my own pieces. I want to keep improving and introduce new techniques.

Who would you like to do a commission for and why?

I would like to work for those who like and appreciate my work. I love taking on commissions for everyone.

What has been your favourite commission to date and why?

I open my commission list once a year and work exclusively on a series called “La Siesta” (the nap) The idea is to adjust and personalise the figures so that the people who commission me feel a connection to them.

What has been your favourite exhibition/art trade fair that you have exhibited at and why?

I did my own exhibition about Alice in Wonderland and I loved drawing the illustrations in my own way since everyone knows the story of Lewis Carroll.

What is a typical day in the life of an artist?

It’s less romantic than people might imagine. But I love my job, and every day I try to learn new things and paint in different ways.
