Based on the response of two artists’ experience of London, this exhibition of urban life supports the ‘Paintings in Hospitals’ and ‘Red Thread’ charities. The show takes its name from the 19th century Necropolis Railway Company that aimed to monopolise the removal of corpses from London.

Cherry Pickles and Alexander Lumsden, like so many other artists, have been drawn to London to work. The city has directly influenced the two artists’ subject matter, their colour palettes and their desire to give back to the community.

Lumsden, a Swedish artist trained in the Caribbean, will exhibit huge canvases conveying the underground world of London’s tube travellers. For this, he has used the space and materials available to him as artist-in-residence at Daler Rowney, the arts materials suppliers.

Pickles, a Bridgend-born Welsh artist, is a tutor at the Prince’s Drawing School. She originally came to London to learn how to paint and the city itself now inspires much of her most striking work. The images of random celebrity and atrocity in her paintings and on her misshapen cardboard burial urns are taken from discarded free newspaper pages found in the London transport system.

The Red Thread charity offers a series of workshops to young people recently hospitalised due to youth violence, to then see and make art. Lumsden, who was asked by Lambeth Council to run workshops for young offenders after the Brixton riots, has persuaded the charity to be involved in a series of workshops linked to the exhibition.

Ten young people who have recently worked with the team will join Pickles and Lumsden for a series of workshops at the gallery, at the Prince’s Drawing School and at other public arts venues.

As is usual at the Menier, any gallery proceeds from the exhibition go to the ‘Paintings in Hospitals’ charity that provides works of art to create a more stimulating environment for hospital patients, visitors and staff.

Red Thread

The aim of the charity to offer the opportunity to explore abilities and places that these young people might otherwise regard as outside their territory. The work produced in these workshops will be exhibited in Kings College Hospital.
