This summer I was honoured to be asked to paint the ‘jewel in the crown’ mural at the incredible Look Again Newhaven Festival of Supergraphics. The festival has transformed the East Sussex town with public artworks and events.
The wall I painted is in the town centre, a busy hub and meeting place. It’s an enormous wall so I recruited a small team of skilled painters to help.
For the first time, I was using a scissor lift (I usually use scaffolding) and it was pretty fantastic. You can continually adjust the height of the platform to be working at a comfortable height; no more chronic back aches and chiropractic repairs are needed after this job.
As usual, I used Daler Rowney System3 Acrylic Fluid which were perfect for the lumpy bumpy bricks. They covered brilliantly and enabled us to paint the rough surface super-fast. Not only that but the colours are (literally) unmatched in other kinds of paint and having the right colours in my work is essential.
Painting a mural as a team is always more fun than painting solo and so to be painting the words Spend Your Time Together whilst working with my biggest team yet felt very fitting.
I was really pleased with the final mural, and it has become a popular spot for people taking photographs in front of it, together with their favourite people.
