In October 2023, Daler-Rowney launched the first artist residency at their Bracknell headquarters, welcoming UK-based oil painter and researcher Emily Gillbanks as their inaugural resident. This new initiative is designed to offer emerging and established artists the opportunity to engage directly with Daler-Rowney’s working environment, products and people.
Emily Gillbanks, originally from East Anglia, completed her MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art. Her practice sits at the intersection of traditional portraiture and conceptual research, often informed by data, identity and lived experience. She has received several accolades, including The Fribourg Philanthropies Painting Prize and the László Medal for Excellence.
During her 14-day residency, Emily was tasked with producing three original artworks depicting employees from within the Daler-Rowney team. Immersing herself in the daily life of the company, she explored the inner workings of the factory and colour lab, observing how paints are developed and manufactured. This behind-the-scenes access provided a unique backdrop for her portraits, giving the works a rich, narrative depth that echoed the spirit of the brand.
In addition to her painting, Emily led a hands-on workshop for employees, introducing them to her data-informed approach to art. The session offered insight into how personal information, statistics, and digital tools can be translated into visual forms—encouraging participants to consider new ways of expressing themselves creatively.
Reflecting on her time at Daler-Rowney, Emily shared:
“I have so much gratitude towards the Daler-Rowney team who invited me to take part in this new residency. The creative atmosphere helped me to gain confidence in directly approaching the subjects I wish to paint… I am sure this newfound confidence is going to continue to shape my art for years to come. Overall, this special experience has by far been one of the most enriching experiences of my career, so far!”
