Art Battle Manchester x Daler-Rowney

For over a decade, Art Battle Manchester has been creating a unique space for artists and audiences to connect through live painting, performance and creativity. What began as an independent grassroots event has evolved into one of Manchester’s most recognisable live art experiences – bringing together emerging talent, established artists and curious first-time audiences in venues across the city.

At each battle, artists step into a fast-paced environment where they are challenged to create original artwork live in front of a packed crowd within a 30 minute timeframe. The audience moves around the space as the work evolves, witnessing the entire creative process unfold in real time before voting for the artists they want to see progress to the next round.

The result is an atmosphere that feels part exhibition, part performance and part celebration of creative risk-taking. Live DJ’s provide the backing-track to what The Guardian described as “the city’s most energetic art event”.

The idea for Art Battle Manchester came from a simple realisation shared by founders Sophie and John. While Sophie introduced John to galleries and art events, he often felt disconnected from the traditional art world, believing it wasn’t designed for people without formal training or insider knowledge. Through conversations together, they recognised there were likely many others who felt the same way – and that there was space for a more inclusive, high-energy and unpretentious creative event where everyone could engage with art openly and confidently. From that idea, Art Battle Manchester was born.

Unlike a traditional gallery setting, Art Battle Manchester removes barriers between artists and audiences. Visitors are encouraged to engage directly with the work as it happens – seeing the decision-making, experimentation and spontaneity behind each piece. Whether someone is a practising artist or attending their very first creative event, the format creates an accessible and welcoming experience that puts creativity at the centre of the room.

Over the years, Art Battle Manchester has provided a platform for over 300 artists across a wide range of styles and disciplines. From illustrators and mural artists to abstract painters and experimental creatives, each event reflects the diversity of Manchester’s creative community and the individuality of the artists taking part. Some artists have had such an adrenaline rush taking part that it’s given them confidence to sell work, get a studio and in a few cases, even give up their day job!

Community has always been central to the project. Alongside the live events, Art Battle Manchester has collaborated with local organisations, creative spaces and independent venues to create opportunities for artists to exhibit their work, connect with new audiences and develop confidence in their practice. The events have also helped raise over £130,000 for local grassroots causes and community initiatives over the years.

The collaboration with Daler-Rowney has helped support this ongoing mission to make creativity visible, inclusive and accessible. Having trusted materials available for artists working under pressure allows participants to focus entirely on expression and experimentation during the intensity of the live rounds.
